Baby Blues

02/10/2012

Are all babies born with blue eyes? No! But, like many myths, this one does have a root in reality.

Baby Blue Eyes

MANY babies are born with blue eyes because the melanin (which you typically hear about in relation to skin colour, but also is the pigment that colours your eyes and hair) has often not been fully deposited in the iris at the time of birth. According to our pediatrician, the melanin has typically reached a stable level at around six months of age.

So if your baby is born with brown eyes, don’t be surprised. Or if your baby is born with blue eyes and you and your partner both have brown eyes, don’t go blaming the postman until after the baby is six months old when the baby’s “real” eye colour will shine through – even then genetics are a complicated subject so it’s best to leave the postman out of it!
