Cankle Queen

As I sit here typing this, I am currently without ankles. I had them yesterday morning, but they have once again disappeared somewhere between my swollen calves and feet. There are so many side effects of pregnancy that no one talks about, but cankles (calf going straight into feet without tapering for an ankle – for those of you not down with the vernacular) was actually one I was aware of prior to embarking upon this adventure. That being said, I really wasn’t expecting it to happen to me. Sure my cute boots stopped fitting over my calves months ago, but I’d made it well into the third trimester without any swelling in my feet or ankles so I thought I’d make it for the whole stretch… I was so very wrong. Around Week 31 of my pregnancy, not only did I get some swelling in my feet/ankles/calves, my ankles disappeared by the time I heated up my lunch with my feet bulging from my ballet flats by dinner time.

I’ve received a lot of advice on how to reduce the swelling:

  • Drink more water – I’m currently drinking approximately 10-11 glasses a day so I don’t think this is working for me.
  • Elevate your feet – I really don’t know who has the opportunity to do this. Even if I was a housewife, which I am not, how would a housewife find the time to sit around elevating her feet all day?!
  • Reduce your sodium intake – I admit to having a high sodium diet, but I also have a sodium deficiency and extremely low blood pressure so I need that salt!
  • Wear support hose – I have not tried this, but given how hot I am all the time, adding a layer of non-breathable fabric sounds less than appealing.
  • Sleep on your left side – Done since early in the second trimester.
  • Exercise – 6 times a week.
  • Don’t cross your legs – I have been working on this one. I admit, I subconsciously do this at my desk and in meetings.

Thus far I have not found a cure, but according to the Mayo Clinic, it’s not dangerous to me or my baby unless it’s sudden/severe or in one leg, so I guess I’ll just have to reduce the number of skirts I wear until baby makes his debut!
