Heartburn City

“I have heartburn that is radiating my knee caps.” – Juno

Perhaps it’s true that in every joke there is an ounce of truth – or perhaps in this case, more than an ounce. For the 18th week of my pregnancy, my body gave to me… post-dinner heartburn! <To be sung to the tune of the The Twelve Days of Christmas’ five golden rings line.> This could be viewed as a positive or a negative:

  • Dinner + Heartburn – Post-Dinner Snack = Fewer Calories ∴ Less Weight Gain*
  • Dinner + Heartburn = Groaning on Couch while Watching Bad Summer TV
*Note: “∴” is a mathematical symbol for “therefore” for my humanities-based friends.
There is some good news though, you’re not alone. “More than half of all pregnant women report symptoms of severe heartburn, particularly during their second and third trimesters…Heartburn in pregnancy may occur because of changing hormone levels, which can affect the muscles of the digestive tract.” While this may not make your heartburn go away, we all know misery loves company. So find your local Babies R’ Us and stand next to the first pregnant woman you see and start complaining about your heartburn, chances are she’ll commiserate!
